Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Second Earth Eco Yoga Mats

How do Second Earth yoga mats compare to others?
Ah, one of my favorite questions—because it gives me a chance to brag 😎
When we started Second Earth, our goal was simple: create a yoga mat that’s eco-friendly, durable, and performs better than anything else out there. After lots of research and testing, the results speak for themselves.
Grip: Our mats are seriously non-slip. Yoga instructors and seasoned yogis love them because the grippy surface supports every pose with confidence. Perfect for beginners and pros alike.
Durability: We combine natural rubber with jute fibres or cork to create a mat that’s built to last. Jute is super strong (think hessian), and cork is one of nature’s toughest materials. Compared to other eco mats, ours are longer-lasting due to the high quality ingredients and design.

What’s the best way to clean and care for my Second Earth yoga mat?
No one likes a smelly mat, right? 😅
- Storage: Keep your mat dry, shady, and ventilated. Avoid leaving it wet or in direct sunlight.
- Basic cleaning: Wipe down with a soft cloth and clean water.
-
Deeper clean: Use our DIY yoga mat spray (or any natural cleaner):
- 4 parts water
- 1 part white vinegar
- 3 drops of essential oil (tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus, or lemongrass)
Lightly spritz, wipe, and air-dry. Avoid harsh soaps or vigorous scrubbing—they can damage the mat.

Do your mats contain latex?
Our mats are made from natural rubber, so if you have a latex allergy, the risk is very low. We use a high-heat process to toughen the rubber, which destroys most latex proteins—but we can’t guarantee 100% latex-free.
Does natural rubber have a smell?
When first unrolled, you might notice a natural aroma. Most people love it 😄. If it’s too strong, wipe the mat down or leave it to air out. The smell fades quickly.
Are glues or binding agents used?
Nope! Our patented process fuses the jute and natural rubber naturally, making our mats one of the most eco-friendly options around.

Are Second Earth mats suitable for hot yoga?
Yes, for most yoga styles including heated classes. But for Bikram or very hot environments, frequent exposure may reduce their lifespan. Also avoid leaving mats in direct sunlight for long periods.
My mat feels slippery at first. What should I do?
No stress! Occasionally, a new mat may feel slippery due to manufacturing residue or natural rubber “sweating.”
- Let it air out for a night or two.
- Wipe it down gently with water or a vinegar-water mix (1:10 ratio).
- Gentle rubbing helps break in the surface.
Your mat will grip better with use, just like all yoga mats.
Why does the jute in my mat have discoloration?
We use natural, unbleached jute to stay eco-friendly. This means each mat is unique, with natural variations in colour—especially lighter mats.
Can I use Second Earth mats for Pilates or other workouts?
Yes! Our mats aren’t just for yoga. They’re perfect for Pilates, stretching, meditation, HIIT or any floor-based workout. The grippy surface keeps you stable, and the cushioning protects your joints.
Are Second Earth mats biodegradable or recyclable?
We’re proud to say our mats are made with natural, eco-friendly materials like cork, jute, and natural rubber and are biodegradable.
Can I travel with my Second Earth yoga mat?
Absolutely! Our mats can be rolled up easily for travel. For best results, keep it in a breathable bag and avoid tightly compressing it for long periods. Each mat also comes with a complimentary cotton carry strap so you can swing it over your shoulder.
How long will my Second Earth mat last?
With regular use and proper care, your mat can last years. The natural rubber combined with jute or cork is built to withstand daily yoga practice, stretching, and even heated classes. Think of it as a long-term investment in your practice and the planet.
Do Second Earth mats have any certifications?
Yes! Our mats are made with sustainable materials and are free from harsh chemicals, PVC, or toxic dyes. They are SGS tested to EU REACH standards for over 200 substances. We follow environmentally responsible processes to make sure your yoga mat is safe for you and the planet.
Can I use a yoga mat towel on my Second Earth mat?
Totally! If you sweat a lot or do hot yoga, a towel on top of your mat can protect it and improve grip. Just make sure the towel is clean and doesn’t trap moisture for long periods.
What if my mat gets damaged? Do you offer replacements?
We love our mats and want you to love them too! If your mat has a manufacturing defect, reach out to our team and we’ll help you sort it out. We want every yogi to have a mat they’re excited to practice on.
Can I personalize my mat?
Currently, we don’t offer custom prints or colours, but each mat is unique due to natural jute and cork variations. This makes every mat one-of-a-kind and truly earthy and authentic.
Are Second Earth mats suitable for kids?
Yes! The non-toxic materials, soft cushioning, and non-slip surface make them safe and comfortable for children to use. Perfect for yoga, stretches, or even mindful play.
Are Second Earth mats really the coolest mats in Australia (and maybe the world)?
We’ll leave that up to you 😏—but we like to think yes!
